Like most godfearing red-white-and-blue-blooded Americans, I spend about 16 hours a day watching girls’ high school swimming, and let me say, it’s a travesty that the sport is 90% trans girls now.

?? Since when is calling out pro-islamists just pretending to be pro-gay rights? Iran beats women to death for wearing the wrong clothes and tortures atheists if you want some more groups you can claim I’m just pretending to care about.

It’s called critical support. I can support both Iran’s self-defense from genocidal maniacs while simultaneously criticizing them for their human rights abuses. It’s something that people with a functioning brain can do - hold two ideas in their head at once.

Besides, Israel has killed more gay people in the last year just through sheer numbers of the people they’ve exterminated than Iran has ever.

Yes, and carpet bombing is entirely more evil. Iran is the lesser of two evils here. Isn’t that what liberals said we should always strive for? The lesser of two evils?

Not lesser, just different. The two countries are very different and you can’t really draw a sensible comparison. Additionally I would point out that Iran has been supplying weapons, money, and intelligence to Hamas and Hezbollah for years. Have Hamas been a good thing for Gaza?

But let’s not forget Yemen. Vastly more people have died in the Yemeni civil war (100s of thousands of civilians) which was started by the houthis, who are an Iranian proxy. They also propped up Bashar al Assad, who used chemical weapons against the Syrian population. They also had a hand in the Sudanese civil war.

So yeah Iran hasn’t directly been involved in genocide, but they’ve been encouraging and funding it for a good while. Not good guys.

If a country that was more progressive than the US (not hard to find one) started bombing the shit out of New York City, would you be like “well, they deserve it for their transphobia”?

Do you realize that Orthodox Jews consider women to be inferior to men? Like, they won’t even shake a woman’s hand.

Sacha Baron Cohen, Zionist shithead though he is, actually got chased down the street in Israel by an angry mob for playing his flamboyant gay character Bruno. He had to yell “I’m a Jew I’m a Jew” to keep from getting the shit kicked out of him.

Israel is literally committing genocide RIGHT NOW. I’m sure there are plenty of gay, trans, nonbinary Palestinians who have head their limbs blown off, if that’s really what upsets you.

The genocide apologism is so obvious it’s sad. You point to one issue that will make liberals go “oh no, scary Muslims!” and you run with that. Fix your heart.

Literally nobody is “cheering on” Iran. As so many others have said, we’re cheering for the defeat of Israel. May they rot in hell.

Imperialist aggression is wrong. Full stop. You don’t get to murder a bunch of people because you claim the moral high ground on one issue. The US never “brought democracy to Iraq” either. They killed a million people and ran some sham elections for the optics.

Call me self-righteous all you want. You’re defending settler colonialist aggression. Give the Palestinians a chance at self-determination and stop murdering people in their homes. Then we can talk about LGBTQ rights.

People literally are cheering on Iran, hence the meme. Lucky you for not seeing it. Please explain how pointing out defending a brutal theocracy is wrong means must I back a different one.

You may not get this, but real life isn’t good guys vs bad guys, both states are evil. You aren’t obligated to back a side, you can just watch both evil states suffer. Or fuck it, cheer for Iran and assume anyone who doesn’t is a genocide apologist or whatever, I’m not your conscience.

Nobody is out there crowing about the superiority of Iran. Or how Iran is sooooooo great.

It’s just schadenfreude. It’s a quadruple heroin overdose of schadenfreude directly in our veins. We’ve screamed and cried and protested and called reps and done everything we could for 2 years while watching a genocide live on TV. For 2 years.

It’s very cathartic to see that evil genocidal pedophile colony get its shit rocked. I cheered watching a hypersonic missile hit the Israeli Pentagon and I’ll keep cheering.

Israel hit first. They called it preemptive but it was premeditated. Big difference. They punched above their weight now the hit dog is hollering. The very moment Israel sues for peace and comes to the table with concessions I’ll support the violence coming to a negotiated end. And not a moment before. Until then. Pound them into fucking sand. Twist the goddamn knife.

Chump can get involved if he wants but I won’t go die for Israel. Not for all the money held by the Forbes 500. If they call a draft I’ll dodge it.

Iran has the right to defend itself.

Eh, one side is committing genocide, has been ethnically cleansing Palestinian, continually attacking neighboring countries, and effectively murdering gay people as well (do you think the 2000 pound bombs make an exception for gay people?) and the other side is a theocracy with all the flaws that come with that. When it comes down to it, Israel is far, far worse than Iran. You can support parties you’re critical of.

I disagree, for three reasons. The first is effectively “inaction in the face of an oppressive status quo is complicity”, and that’s the weakest of the three, I’ll be the first to admit. The second is that any nation has a right to defend itself when attacked. And that is very much what’s going on here.

The third, for me, is the main reason, and it’s an analogy. Imagine a situation with three people, a child rapist, a wife beater, and a child. The rapist is on the verge of raping the child, and the wife beater asks you to give him your gun to stop it (just imagine you’re unable to fire it yourself for some reason). In this scenario, I would give the gun to the wife beater. I would be supporting a bad guy (he beats his wife), but I would do it 11 times out of 10.

For clarity, Israel is the child rapist, Iran the wife beater. And yes, the relative magnitude of immorality here corresponds with that between Israel and Iran.

          I disagree completely.

The crimes of both abovementioned parties against other countries and their own people have been thoroughly documented ad nauseum throughout contemporary history. It’s a pity their isn’t an actual hell for either “party of god” to burn in as they create living hells in their respective countries and region.

I propose that it’s morally sound to oppose both because, in my view, the Islamists and the Zionists are both child rapists, if we use your analogy. In context, the Islamists haven’t raped as many children yesterday, but they’ve done the deed before with just as much gusto.

Ultimately, I would hope they strangle each other to death. To quote a dying Mercutio from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette, “A plague o’ both your houses!”

I think the main error in your thinking is that you severely underestimate the magnitude of evil that Israel has inflicted on the world. 750,000 Palestinians ethnically cleansed in the Nakba, 400,000 arabs (mostly Palestinians but also Syrians) ethnically cleansed as a result of the June 1967 war, 3500 Palestinian refugees murdered over two nights in Sabra and Shatila, the illegal settlements, the apartheid (this word covers more than I can cover, I hope you don’t underestimate the extent of what this means), the mowing the lawn operations, the current ongoing genocide, the blockade of Gaza in 2008, the intentional and unpunished rape of Palestinian prisoners, the continual illegal invasions of neighboring countries every decade from the 60s to now. Iran, while bad, does not hold a candle to what suffering, violence, child murder, Israel has meted out over 77 years. When people say Israel are the Nazis of today, they are not exaggerating.

Personally, I would support the US in WWII, despite slavery, despite the Jim Crow laws, despite the atom bombs, despite being founded on genocide, and so on, and others wouldn’t because both sides bad. Purity politics (which is what you’re advocating for) does not stop holocausts. I think you agree with me on this judgement. I also think that you’re underinformed, and that that’s why you think the same reasoning doesn’t apply here.

As plainly I can put it:

The nation-states of Iran and Israel have a “right to exist”, inasmuch as they actually serve the interests of the people they claim to govern within internationally recognized territorial borders.

The regimes that hold power in those nation-states must be tried for crimes against humanity and executed as war-criminals.

They will reap what they’ve sown in this messianic decades-long tit-for-tat, and I will drink to their demise, assuming they don’t drag the world into nuclear armageddon.

We fundamentally see geopolitical culpability in that region completely differently.

You: Zionists are worse than Islamists.

Me: They’re equally horrific, and I hope they both die.

              We’re at an impasse.

We’re not necessarily at an impasse! Use facts to back up your assertions about Iran. Give examples. Argue for your position. Personally I would really appreciate that, because I’m very open to the possibility of being wrong! I know the basics of Iranian history, so there’s probably a lot that I don’t know that could convince me that they’re at the same magnitude of badness as Israel. And if you’re basing the idea that Iran is as bad as Israel on actual historical facts, and not just pulling it out of your ass as you’re currently making it seem, I could stand to learn a lot from you, and you could convince someone of your position. That’s a win-win.
